Bishop Zubik’s Letters Announcing New Parish Location and Name
May 18, 2019
Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint John XXIII Quasi-Parish:
Easter blessings as together we rejoice in the triumphant glory of the Risen Lord and his victory over death. May God fill your home with peace, hope and love.
Five years ago we initiated On Mission for The Church Alive! with the goal of offering a deeper relationship with Jesus and the Catholic Church. Over that time you have considered, prayed and planned about how best to serve God and his people through vibrant parishes and effective ministries.
In 2015, after consultation with the chaplain and the faithful of your community. a proposal was made to establish a quasi-parish to ensure the future of [the] Latin Mass community in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The creation [of] Saint John XXIII Quasi-Parish was the result of that proposal.
More recently, in light of the assignment of priests of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to provide for your pastoral and spiritual needs, a new proposal was introduced to give your community a permanent home. On May 14, 2019, the diocesan Priest Council and Vicars General gave unanimous consent to the proposal, and I have decided to enact these recommendations.
Effective July 1, 2019, Saint John XXIII Quasi-Parish will be located at what is now Risen Lord Church, Marshall-Shadeland. It is my hope that the church and school buildings will fulfill the needs of your growing and vibrant community. In the interim, I am asking your priests, Canon William Avis and Canon John O’Connor to work with you toward the establishment of a new parish. Toward that end and consistent with diocesan practice, I am asking Canon Avis to forward to me three potential names tor the new parish.
The priests of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest will continue to provide for you while fostering spiritual growth and a strong community. Their service as good shepherds will certainly lead you closer to Jesus.
With your faith in Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit, I invite you to warmly love and serve each other as we all seek to build up The Church Alive! May you discover the mission that God has planned for you to share.
Grateful for our continued efforts together in being On Mission for The Church Alivel, and for our belief that “Nothing is Impossible with God,” I am
Your brother in Christ,
Most Reverend David A. Zubik
Bishop of Pittsburgh

northeast Iowa, Phoenix, Arizona and southwest Wisconsin. While in High School, he convertedto Catholicism. He entered the Pre-Seminary Formation of the Institute of Christ the King in Rockford, Illinois and did an additional year at the Institute’s house in Bayerisch Gmain, Germany. His priestly formation took place at the Institute’s seminary in Gricigliano for six years. After being ordained deacon, he spent a year in Saint Louis, Missouri where he was ordained along with Canon Matthew Talarico at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis by then Archbishop, now Cardinal Raymond Burke in 2007. Since then, he has served in Saint Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, Oakland and San Jose, California and finally in Tucson, Arizona. In addition he is the Master of Ceremonies for the U.S. Province. His interests include history, philosophy, apologetics, and hiking.
Canon John O’Connor
A native of Newton, New Jersey, Canon John O’Connor is the second of three siblings, all of whom were homeschooled through high school. Canon O’Connor participated in local sports for cross country and track, and he was a member of the local youth orchestra. He studied briefly at the Franciscan University of Steubenville prior to entering the Institute of Christ the King in 2008 at the age of 18. During his time at Franciscan, he frequently attended Mass at St. Boniface Church.
Canon O’Connor spent a year of pre-seminary formation at the Institute’s United States
headquarters in Chicago prior to seven years of formation at the seminary in Tuscany, Italy. After his ordination at the hands of His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke in 2016, Canon O’Connor has spent his first two years of priesthood serving at the Institute’s apostolate in Limerick, Ireland. Some of his hobbies include American history, playing the violin, scuba diving, and hiking.
These are very extraordinary priests called to serve the Saint John XXIII parish community. They will receive their official appointments to serve the parish community by Bishop David A. Zubik. We know that all will welcome them to Pittsburgh as they begin their service in October.
New Youth Choir Album: Jubilate et Gaudete
At the end of another successful season, the Pueri and Gradus Cantorum recorded 18 tracks for a new album entitled Jubilate et Gaudete. A keepsake project for the youth choirs’ families and friends, the album is a great milestone for both choirs, as they continue to grow in number and in ability.
Jubilate et Gaudete features chants such as Mass XVII, Pueri Hebræorum (from Palm Sunday), and Ave Verum Corpus; polyphonic selections include round-style arrangements of familiar sacred melodies. The Gradus Cantorum recorded more challenging polyphonic motets as well, including Voce Mea by Croce, Domine Non Sum Dignus by Victoria, and Jesu Rex Admirabilis by Palestrina.
Please enjoy the following samples from the album. Many thanks to Mrs. Burchill, Ms. Maria Goeltz and Ms. Elizabeth Schurdak as section leaders, and the entire Pueri and Gradus Cantorum choirs and their parents for their hard work and dedication this season!

St. John XXIII Youth Choirs: Chant Camp and the Upcoming 2017-2018 Season
A wonderful group of nearly 30 children and young adults participated in the very first parish “Chant Camp” in August 2017! The camp was 3 days long, lasting from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on August 16th, 17th, and 18th. Led by Mrs. Sharon Burchill, campers were introduced to the fundamentals of Gregorian chant, with lessons and activities teaching chant notation, Latin pronunciation, vocal technique, solfege, and modality. The campers beautifully put their training to the test by singing the Missa de Angelis, Ubi Caritas, Ave Verum Corpus, and Salve Regina at Sunday’s High Mass on August 20th! A very sincere “thank you” goes to Mrs. Burchill, Fr. Dolan, the Holy Wisdom staff, and the parents of these great kids for their generosity and support of this exciting program. What a blessing to see so many young faces sharing the treasured sacred chant of the Catholic Church!
For those interested, the St. John XXIII Youth Choirs will begin rehearsals for the 2017-2018 season on Saturday, September 16th in the Archives Room below the church. The Pueri Cantorum, open to children ages 8 to 12, will rehearse from 10 – 11am. The High School Schola, open to young adults ages 13 and up, will rehearse from 11am – noon. For more information, or to register, please contact conductor Mrs. Sharon Burchill at email@example.com.

Interior Repairs Completed
Scaffolding was erected in the Church in late January as restoration work began on the water damage from the leaking roof. The work is now completed.
During the summer of 2016, extensive repairs were made to the roof of St. Boniface Church, which included the removal of the roof tiles and replacement of the waterproof underlayment.
Pueri Cantorum (Children’s Choir)
St. John XXIII Parish is pleased to offer opportunities for children ages 8 and up to sing in the Pueri Cantorum (Children’s Choir) ensemble!
No audition is necessary, but the ability to sing tunefully is preferred. The choir rehearses on Saturday mornings from 10-11 a.m. at the St. Boniface site of Holy Wisdom/St. John XXIII Parish in the Northside. Rehearsals will provide free instruction in sight singing, part singing, Gregorian chant, Latin pronunciation, and child vocal technique.
The Pueri Cantorum sings at select High Masses during Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, and at select Saturday morning Low Masses. In addition, singers in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to be Schola Apprentices, singing with the Adult Schola for select rehearsals and Masses. For more information, or to register, please contact conductor Mrs. Sharon Burchill at firstname.lastname@example.org.
