Wednesday, February 18, 2015, is Ash Wednesday, which begins the holy season of Lent. The blessed ashes imposed on our foreheads remind us of our mortality and our dependence on the Paschal Mystery of Our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection to experience His new life of grace. Lent is a time of penance, almsgiving and fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat in remembrance of the Lord’s death.
Here are some St. John XXIII Parish events:
Ash Wednesday Latin Masses Feb. 18, 2015: 9:00 AM, and 7:00 PM (Distribution of Ashes takes place BEFORE the Mass in the extraordinary form. The Mass which follows begins with the Introit.)
Stations of the Cross: Every Friday evening at 6:30 PM, followed by Mass at 7:00 PM. On the Fridays of Lent there will not be a 9:00 AM Mass.
First Friday: March 6, 2015: Stations at 6:30 PM, Mass at 7:00 PM, followed by exposition, Sacred Heart Litany and Reparation and Consecration Prayers, Confession, silent adoration, benediction and reposition of the Blessed Sacrament, as usual. (Exception: April 3, 2014, is Good Friday)
First Saturday: March 7, 2015: Mass at 9:00 AM, followed by prayers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as usual. (Exception: April 4, 2015, is Holy Saturday)
First Sundays: March 1, 2015: as usual, after the 11:00 AM Mass the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration until 4:00 PM when there will be prayers, benediction and reposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Please come to adore the Lord throughout that time.
(Exception: April 5, 2015, Easter Sunday)
First Confessions: For St. John XXIII Parish on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 10:30 AM (Please let these children go first)
Confessions: Before the Sunday Masses until the Sanctus. Tuesday evenings before the 7:00 PM Mass until 6:45 PM. In response to our Bishop’s Evangelization summons: “The Light Is Still On For You”, we will join every diocesan church and have confessions on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, after the 6:00 PM Mass until 9:00 PM, at St. Boniface Church.
LATIN HOLY WEEK EVENTS FOR ST. JOHN XXIII PARISH
Palm Sunday: March 29, 2015 – Palms blessed & distributed at all Masses.
Procession at the 11:30 AM Mass (NOTE: Mass begins at 11:30 AM)
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week: MASS WILL BE AT 7:00 PM only on each of these days.
Holy Thursday: April 2, 2015 – Chrism Mass at St. Paul Cathedral at 10:00 AM
Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper – 7:00 PM
Church opened for visitation from 8:30 PM – Midnight
Good Friday: April 3, 2015 – Stations at Noon and Sermon on our devotion to the Lord’s Passion. Confessions will also be heard.
Good Friday Liturgy of the Passion 1:30 PM.
There will be NO EVENING SERVICES on Good Friday.
Solemn Easter Vigil: Saturday, April 4, 2015, Initial ceremonies begin at 10:00 PM, with Holy Mass following.
Easter Sunday: April 5, 2015, Easter Mass will be at 11:30 AM (Note the change of time for Easter Sunday only). There will be no 8:00 AM Mass or Confessions on Easter Sunday morning.
